One Band, 5 Songs: U2 (Part 1: The ’80s)

Hailing from Dublin, Ireland, U2 formed in 1976 when Paul Hewson (Bono), David Evans (The Edge), and Adam Clayton answered an ad placed by Larry Mullen Jr. on Mount Temple Comprehensive School’s notice board. The band released their debut album Boy, on October 20, 1980, followed by five additional albums, one EP, and one live record before the end of the decade. Throughout the decade, U2 toured the world, performed at Live Aid, headlined Amnesty International’s A Conspiracy of Hope tour with Sting (and The Police reuniting for the last three shows) and Bryan Adams, and achieved mega mainstream success in 1987 with their fifth album, The Joshua Tree.
