Lxs Cochinxs Discusses Performing in Safe Spaces, Gender Blending, & Sharing their Message at Doll Fest

In just one week, the Bay Area will be hosting the inaugural Doll Fest. The two day festival will take place at the Cornerstone in Berkeley, CA and is “a celebration of the feminine energy, friendship, and community gathering together in support of one another.”

The lineup is a jaw dropping list of rad bands all with a femme energy to them along with multi-genre artists. Doll Fest will feature artists such as The Iron RosesThe DartsTsunami BombDog Party, Tess & The Details and many more on March 1st and 2nd along with a pre-show party on February 28th.

We wanted to get in on the action, so we’ve asked the amazing bands a handful of questions about the festival including who they’re stoked to be playing with and what they think a festival of this caliber means to our scene.

We chatted with Marika Mariquita (machines, bass, & vocals) and Carla Cabrona (guitar & vocals) of LA’s Lxs Cochinxs about how Bay Area influences tie in with the sounds of Southern California, how – as a trans lesbian band – they have been welcomed safely into many DIY spaces, and much more. Check out our interview below and grab your tickets to Doll Fest now via their website here!

Tell us a little about yourself and why you’re excited to play Doll Fest.

We are a trans lesbian, post-gender, multi-gender band so it’s exciting to represent the diversity and many dimensions of femme-hood and womanhood.

Kendra Sheetz

Which bands or artists are you most stoked to see or play alongside?

We’re excited to play the same day as Auxiliö and we’re always pumped to see Trap Girl perform <3

Kendra Sheetz

How has the Oakland music scene or Bay Area culture influenced your sound or creative process?

We are based in Los Angeles, so our sound is born from the music we hear daily in Southern California. Much of that music – cumbia, merengue, punk, and electro – is integral to the Bay’s sound too. We definitely have that in common!

Kendra Sheetz

How do you see events like Doll Fest contributing to greater representation and empowerment of women in the music industry?

It’s beautiful to see a lineup of exclusively femme and trans-led acts. We hope Doll Fest inspires other promoters to create similar spaces in their regions.

Kendra Sheetz

What unique challenges have you faced as femme and post-gender musicians, and how have you overcome them?

Surprisingly, people have been very cordial with us. The cis folks who have booked us and invited us into their spaces have made efforts to keep us safe and make us feel welcomed. We are deeply grateful to them and everyone who has made us feel at home.

Kendra Sheetz

What message do you hope to convey to your audience through your performance at Doll Fest?

Free Palestine, free Congo, free Sudan. Global liberation, the land is for the people. Fuck the cops, Chinga la migra. Let’s dance over our oppressors’ bodies – this is the time to lose our shit.
