Solemn Judgement Releases New Single “Spineless”

Fresh off the heels of their debut Your Move EP from July 2019, Solemn Judgement surprised the scene with a brand new single called “Spineless.”

Something that’s struck me from day one with this band is how unified they seem to be. The “us against everybody” mentality of their home city, Detroit bleeds out of their blistering hardcore tunes and presentation and I love it. That especially shines through in this track. It opens with a sludgy riff and chiming cymbal that feels like they’re coming for any and all opposition.

A sensible continuation of their EP, this track is super high energy. It’s heavy enough for boot stompers in the pit, but thrashy enough to skate to.

Marissa Ward formerly fronted one of my all time favorite hardcore bands, Backswing, but this is her best work so far. I love when a hardcore vocalist has good flow. On “Spineless,” her vocal phrasing seems to bounce along with the chugging guitars, especially on the lines, “you’re scared senseless, to face your vices, you’ll judge those for using their voices, spitting and screaming, wanting to be heard, you’ll live in comfort off of those who suffer, so you could be the righteous ones.” It’s a mouthful, but it’s so damn catchy.

But what does it all mean? To me it seems to be a spin on your classic hardcore call out track. However, here they seem to be specifically calling out those that put themselves on a holier-than-thou high horse of wokeness. You know the type who won’t actually put in the work to make a difference and instead use their privileges to ride the coattails of those that do as they amass clout. The shuddering screech of “you ignored the cries of your friends who begged you to have their backs, you left a knife in it instead” as the song comes to an abrupt close rings in my thoughts every time.

I don’t know, maybe I’m wrong about all of that. But this shit goes so dumb hard I started wearing a chain on my neck, so you tell me. Either way, I can’t wait to see what they do next because I think Solemn Judgement is going to be huge.
