Chicago-based Damned Praise has released a cover song by Brandtson, a 90s/00s emo band from Ohio. While currently working on a full-length album and looking to gain additional tracking and vocal mixing skills, Jason Swearingen (the voice and brain behind the project) decided to try their hand at a handful of cover songs. They explained that they have a long list of songs they have wanted to cover and always wanted to do a pop-punk/melodic hardcore take on Brandtson’s song “Breaking Ground.”
Swearingen explains:
“One of my favorite things about folk and Americana music is the prevalence of cover songs artists routinely mix in with their originals, both in sets and on records. There’s somewhat of a cultural ambivalence to doing too many covers in the punk scene (unless you are a covers-only band), and I think that’s a shame. While the glut of cheesy pop-punk covers of top-40 hits at the turn of the century may be an understandable contributing factor to said hesitation, it reinforces an isolated, individualistic streak that can impact our scene’s ability to grow and learn from each other. So I decided to work on a handful of cover songs.”
