Kendra Sheetz Boston-based artist Derek Smith and the Cosmic Vultures has released a brand new EP today entitled Songs from the Plastic Ballroom. And if that name sounds familiar to you, it’s because this new EP is the third release this year!
On this EP, Smith’s sound veers into cinematic soul and phantom pop territory, where Motown and R&B-rock vibes exude a certain confidence and charm. Overall, the four-song EP is a reflection of how most of us are feeling these days, where a sense of hope has been replaced by mental escapism, and any optimism for the future has been shelved for a desire for pure survival.
Smith shared the following about the new album:
“The Plastic Ballroom isn’t a physical place – it’s a state of mind. It’s the room where people perform the versions of themselves they think everyone wants to see. Everything is polished, smiling, rehearsed… but beneath that surface there’s anxiety, loneliness, nostalgia, and dreams trying to break through.”
