Grass Mud Horse Drops a Celtic-Fueled Version of “The Hockey Song”

Niagara, Ontario-based Celtic punk rock band Grass Mud Horse has released their version of a song that is purely all Canadian. “The Hockey Song” has it all – driving banjo, pounding drums, and the kind of raw, communal energy that makes you want to raise your pint and sing along at the rink.

Known for fusing the grit of punk with the soul of Celtic folk, Grass Mud Horse deliver The Hockey Song with driving banjo, pounding drums, and the kind of raw, communal energy that makes you want to raise your pint and sing along at the rink.

Frontman Chris Barry shared the following:

“We didn’t want to just cover it — we wanted to put our stamp on it, crank it right up, and let it loose on the ice. It’s not just a song in Canada — it’s an anthem, and we gave it the Grass Mud Horse treatment: fast, loud, and full of heart. We’ve always believed punk and Celtic music share the same heartbeat — it’s about the people. And in Canada, nothing brings people together like hockey.”

Guitarist Paddy Treacy added:

“This track is our love letter to Canada — to the rinks, the cold nights, and the fans who belt out every word. We’re immigrants and Canadians all rolled into one loud, muddy, Celtic mess — and this song celebrates that.”
