New Jersey-based band Meteor Police recently released a new single entitled “Unwanted in July.” The song will be featured on the band’s upcoming album, which arrives August 28th via Mint 400 Records. The album was written through a period of lineup turnover and was recorded by Rudy Meier at Yung Bull Recording in Brick, then mastered by Pat Noon at Eight Sixteen Recording.

“Unwanted in July” was birthed during a 24-hour songwriting contest in 2024, when the band was given “summer” as its theme. Its lyrics push back against being judged or dismissed for being a punk kid, pairing lines like “You’ve got to suffer to be punk rock” with a mix of suburban nostalgia, resentment, and self-mythology.

Meteor Police later returned to the shelved track with the original music largely intact, revising some of the lyrics and adding trumpet from Joe Gullace. The bridge briefly swerves into a horn-driven, almost Spanish-punk passage before snapping back into the song’s main charge.
