Grand Rapid, MI-based band Pulphonics has released their debut album entitled art is money. The 13-track album is out today and showcases the band’s very diverse sound which combines influences of Blues, Rock, Psychedelia, Progressive Rock, and other flavors of Alternative Rock. The band originally formed with the hopes of reshaping the soundscape of Rock music and its subgenres. The band’s name can be broken down into “pulp” – a shapeless mass of material – and “phonics” – the science of giving meaning to sounds.
art is money represents the struggle that most musicians face, an eternal battle against time, money, and obligations while also trying to write good music. This album is far from a traditional concept album unless the concept is the stream of consciousness of three people simultaneously making music while balancing life’s expectations. It showcases Pulphonics’ first chapter in songwriting. It is chaotic and scattered, but every song is 100% organic, homegrown and range-free Pulphonics. It’s a natural stream of consciousness expressed in songwriting that resonates with the chaos of life.
