The Magic City will be releasing their debut album next month. The self-titled release weaves themes of spiritual liberation, rejuvenation, and rebirth through the Boston modern rock band’s gritty and glittery sound. As a bit of a teaser, the band has released a new single entitled “Ozma Is My Shadow,” which explores gender roles and fluidity.
Band member David Jackel shared the following about the new single:
“When I was 9 or 10, I read The Land of Oz, in which (spoiler alert!), the boy protagonist discovers he was actually a princess at birth, magically transformed and hidden as a boy. When he transforms back, he or she is still essentially the same character – the body is where the soul lives, but it’s not the soul. This concept stayed with me. The song isn’t a retelling of that story, but it springs from that revelation.”
