Hamilton, ONT-based band Dave New World is a band made up of dudes named Dave. Earlier this year, they released their debut single, “No Friends,” which will be featured on their upcoming album Irrational Anthems, set to drop later this year on People of Punk Rock Records.
“No Friends” is a bitter anthem about the loneliness that creeps in when you start missing something that doesn’t exist anymore. It’s a gut-punch commentary on the vapid, hollow culture of social media, where people rack up “friends” like trophies but can’t name a single person who’d show up when it actually matters.
The band’s frontman (Dave, of course!) shared the following about the new single:
“We wrote ‘No Friends’ after realizing that sometimes being alone is better than being part of a movement led by a bunch of hypocrites. It’s about alienation, but it’s also kind of a celebration — like, yeah, I don’t have friends, but at least I’m not a fucking sellout.”
The video serves as metaphor for the self-defeating chase of trying to “make it” by mimicking someone else’s idea of what punk should look like. It’s a satirical portrait of an aspiring punk rocker that’s all too willing to give up his integrity — where image has replaced authenticity, and rebellion is just another costume. The video exposes the ultimate irony that punk — once rooted in individuality, non-conformity, and integrity — is now too often just another mold to fit into.
