Earlier this month, Chicago’s Jessica Ever released a new music video for her song “Ugly & Out of It.” The video’s production was a DIY project among friends. Jessica wandered around Chicago shooting street scenes for B-roll, which she then edited to disorienting levels and projected on a screen over her face, creating a ghostly aesthetic in an attempt to capture the feeling of dissociation.
Sonically, “Ugly & Out of It” was inspired by Hole’s Celebrity Skin-era sound—specifically the closing track, “Petals,” which is marked by dark, shimmery overproduction and a fuzzed-out climax. The single also pulls inspiration from indie-rock darling Indigo De Souza, particularly the rich, clean guitar tone in the intro and verses. Lyrically, “Ugly & Out of It” paints a picture of post-pandemic isolation during a Chicago winter.
