Ramshackle indie punks Milk St. have returned today with a brand new single and an accompanying music video. The song, entitled “Just So,” heralds a new era for the band by showcasing the first fruits from the group’s 2024 recording sessions with engineer and trusted collaborator Cade Earick.
“Just So” serves up a raw insight into a period in frontman Jonah Wakefield’s life where he was overwhelmed by melancholy and without the language and tools to find a way out. Backed by Harry Burns (drums) and Gabe Chambers (bass), Wakefield’s candid lyrics are brought to life in a dynamic arrangement that contrasts the dark lyrical undertow with buoyant energy.
Says Wakefield:
“While dealing with my family splitting up and my father struggling mentally, I dissociated and kept writing, but all that came out was ‘I feel sad.’ The chorus ‘Why are you so sad all the time’ was me mocking myself. Through that, I learned to be gentler with myself and now I see difficult times as kind of a superpower, something to make you able to withstand more down the road.”
The music video for “Just So” is accompanied by an absurdist western odyssey directed by fellow Mainer Matthew Meunier which and utilizes the design talents of Sophia Kotowski. Check out that video below and catch Milk St. on the road this month (dates below)
