Brooklyn’s My Son The Doctor has announced that they have signed to Trash Casual. The 4-piece is known for their 90s slacker rock, post-punk, and schvitz-y live shows. Originally middle school friends, Joel Kalow, Matt Nitzberg, and Brian Hemmert reunited in Brooklyn to form the band in 2019 with drummer John Mason. In 2021, they put out an EP called Taste Those Dreams on Paper Moon Records.

They have released a new single, entitled “Barry Bonds,” which was recorded at Mitch Easter’s studio in North Carolina with friend and engineer Jeremy Snyder (Idles, Gilla Band, Pure Adult). The artwork is by Lydia Gammill of Gustaf. It was mastered by Chicago’s Carl Saff. AND My Son The Doctor has released an accompanying music video as well!

Speaking on the single, the band says:

“What is this song about? It’s about insecurity. It’s about looking into the mirror and wanting to be someone bigger than you are. But you aren’t that person. That person is Barry Bonds. To three short Jewish boys from Northern California and our tall (and oh-so-tender) New York native drummer, Barry Bonds epitomizes all that we look in the mirror and don’t see: muscle, masculinity, and fame in exploding excess.”

And on the music video…:

“Our music video for this song was shot on a DV camera that we took with us on a recent tour, consisting mostly of riveting footage of the Best Western near St. Lawrence University. We found it hilarious, but fate would have it that we couldn’t get our hands on the half dozen necessary cables to transfer DV tape to Macbook for editing. Queue the public domain footage. We downloaded four hours of film from Prelinger Archives, serendipitously located in San Francisco (home turf of the eponym himself). Fortuitous still was the fact that we had a four-hour drive to a show in Binghamton, which guitarist Joel diligently spent editing this masterpiece while the rest of us listened to Can. Sheep, The Hindenburg, Men bowling in plaid…There’s something for everyone in these 4 minutes of fun.”
