Today, we are so excited to be premiering the music video for a new single from Michigan-based band Nonbinary. The single, “Pill Head,” was released as a single last week and will be featured on the band’s upcoming full-length album, The Mockery of Me.
The group is based out of Lansing and Grand Rapids and led by twins Ezra and Marshall Kelly. They began writing music for the project in late 2020 along with Matt Waterman (Jason Alarm, The Devils Cut, Annalies Tang). Later on, other regional musicians – Cody Kuuttila, Jolene Sayers, and Sam Andrade – joined and brought their talents from copious past band experiences including Jason Alarm, The Devils Cut, She/Her/Her’s, Ask, Tidal, Reggie, and Charlie Darling.
Ezra Kelly had the following to say about the new release:
“I think ‘Pill Head’ is about taking your prescription medications even when people talk down on it. I wrote this song because people were telling others that I was taking more pills than I was prescribed. They were acting like people should be worried about me which I don’t take lightly because I’ve struggled with addictions to pills and alcohol before. Not my meds though. I take those because they changed my life in a way I desperately needed for years. This message reflects in the song when I say: entertain the will of faith once I knew the pills to take.’
Marshall added:
“I think the musical style of this song can be welcoming to those who may not be aware that there are others who may have similar life experiences and maybe this can help people feel acceptance. Ezra wrote this, but I feel like the song means being true to yourself – no matter how you interpret a situation, a person, or relationship. It’s about putting yourself first and doing what is best for you regardless of the negative stigmas surrounding your choices.”
