Courtney Barnett with Truman Sinclair in Detroit, MI

Courtney Barnett is back with a new album that released earlier this year, Creature of Habit. Along new tunes, she has been on tour promoting that excellent new album, and I was lucky enough to catch the stop in Detroit.

It has been a busy few weeks with attending a few shows, covering one of them, and also covering a full weekend festival. I’m definitely feeling it right now, and feeling her some of her lyrics more than every right now. I feel like I’m constantly humming “I wanna go out but I wanna stay home” in the back of my head way too often lately.

I was pretty excited to see her again and playing at a The Majestic Theatre, which I have not seen a show at for a while. I think it has been over four years since her last gig in Detroit rock city, and the crowd was excited and ready for her return. I got into the venue shortly after doors had opened, and since I’m a sucker for merch and band shirts I made a quick stop by the booth.

Truman Sinclair was the opener for this tour and while I was unfamiliar with his music, the band really had a great sound and energy that got myself and the rest of the crowd excited. They set a perfectly laid-back, melodic tone for the evening.

Next was the main act, and Courtney and her band came out rocking. While this tour was focused a bit more on her new songs, the set list had a really great mix of past albums shuffled in there. A lot of the new tunes from Creature of Habit seamlessly blended in along with some other crowd favorites (and of course personal favorites like “Nobody Really Cares If You Don’t Go To The Party”). Overall it was an energized time with great memories and shredding, feedback-heavy guitar solos.
