This day had been a long time coming. I finally had the chance to see a band I’ve admired for years, Rainbow Kitten Surprise. Their album How to: Friend, Love, Freefall has been on repeat in my life for a while now. With its piercing lyrics and addictive melodies, it’s one of those rare albums that feels solid from start to finish. Naturally, I was excited to experience their music live.
Opening the show was New Translations, an indie rock band from Nashville, TN. They recently released a new album, Vacation, which blends emotionally charged themes with ’80s-inspired synth-pop. I’ve really grown to appreciate their unique sound, so I was eager to see how it translated to a live performance.
As New Translations took the stage, the room buzzed with anticipation. Lead vocalist Oliver Pierce entered with an energy that immediately set the tone. He moved with fluid rhythm, arms stretched toward the ceiling, hips swaying, and an infectious confidence. The whole band radiated a vibrant, cohesive energy, dressed in matching outfits of bleach-stained pants and mesh tops. At one point, Pierce jumped down into the crowd, dancing alongside exhilarated fans. Their engagement with the audience made for a dynamic and memorable start to the night.
Then came the main event: Rainbow Kitten Surprise, the alternative rock/indie band from Boone, North Carolina, known for their electrifying performances. I hadn’t seen them live before, so I made my way to the front of the stage, filled with anticipation. When lead singer Ela Melo stepped on stage, she was glowing with joy. The rest of the band followed, greeted by the deafening cheers of a passionate crowd. As they launched into their set, the room was filled with rich melodies and emotionally resonant lyrics. The atmosphere felt warm, inclusive, and electric. Looking around, I could see groups of people fully immersed in the moment, singing along, dancing, and taking it all in. Their performance lived up to everything I had hoped for—empowering, intimate, and deeply impactful.
