Walking into the venue I already had such a good feeling about this show, it was one of my favorite kinds, “A Night With…” To me these have always felt more personal and a bit more intimate and slowed down. I got to the show a bit earlier than normal so I got to talk to some of the patrons and they all shared the same excitement for the event. This was one of the first tours since the band, Soul Coughing, rekindled back in 2024! Lots of them had seen Mike Doughty on his solo journey but never them all together so it was such a cool show to get to cover. A little fun fact, Doughty signed with ATO which was co-founded by Dave Matthews. I had learned that Mark Degli Antoni, the keyboardist, became a film score composer back when the band originally split back in 2000
With their being no opener, Soul Coughing came out to get the show going, they started off the night with their song “Bus to Beelzebub” as I heard the crowd come to life behind me. The performance felt like going back in time yet still being present at the same time with the mix of nostalgia and excitement throughout the venue. What stood out most to me was how natural the chemistry felt on stage, it was as if they were still as close as they were in the very beginning. They all have such talents and let the music and mood do the work of setting the vibes. The set was so well balanced, energetic, and persistent making it clear why their return to the stage has been so anticipated.
