Dothan, Alabama punk band Ghosts Among the Pines has released their new single, “Holding On.” The band has revealed that this is the first of two tracks to drop in the lead up to the release of their debut full-length album, Sorry For The Mess, out on June 6th. The band also let slip that plans are already underway for a video to follow in April after the debut of “Holding On.”
“Holding On” is the autobiographical narrative describing the spiral into addiction, and the inevitable hitting rock bottom that forces you to confront the realization that you either continue the self-destructive path of addiction, or take steps to turn things in a different direction. With no budget and a DIY spirit, the song punches well above its humble production. The sound is described as similar to that of the 90s skate and pop punk that lead singer, Mike (Sully) Sullivan, grew up on.
Sullivan says:
“This is about a very specific time in my life in my early 20s when I began to lean into the reputation of being a drunk asshole and made that a part of my punk singer persona. It wasn’t until I met my future wife that I got a handle on the poor decisions I was making. This song is vaguely about the night known canonically as “The Night We Don’t Talk About” because no one needs the gory details, and I don’t actually remember them all. I hope when people listen to it they go deeper than the earworm hooks, and feel the weight of the subject matter, and for people that might also be heading down that path, they can see themselves in it and realize they’re not alone.”
