Time and a locale change has been good to what was once Chicago’s The Fur Coats. After a stint overseas, singer/guitarist Marc Ruvolo (No Empathy, Das Kapital) chose Austin, TX as his – and The Coats’ – new home. In 2014, the trio released their first LP entitled The League of Extraordinary Octopuses, a musical romp that was insightful and reflective of the times. Well, times have clearly changed. We are now all living preexisting conditions with legs. Our social media newsfeed is filled with enough horror to give anyone a month-long panic attack. And there are feelings of hopelessness and thoughts of giving up the fight.
The Fur Coats have embodied this shift in their sophomore LP release, Gumballs in the Meritocracy. Through both its lyrics and its melodies, the album crafts a a darker, more ominous tone than its predecessors. That being said, Gumballs in the Meritocracy, is still classic Fur Coats through and through. The songs may be foreboding, but damn are they catchy. The album will be released on June 6th via Ruvolo’s own Johann’s Face Records and Portland, OR’s HoverCraft Records.
Today, we’re happy to be streaming “Gorgeous, Just Gorgeous” from the new album. Check out the track below and pre-order your copy of Gumballs in the Meritocracy now!
