Last year brought us a very comprehensive oral history of Bad Religion via Do What You Want: The Story of Band Religion. And it was announced today that 2021 will be bringing us another page turner, this one revolving around the musical sphere of Leftover Crack.
Penned by L.o.C guitarist Brad Logan (also in F-Minus, Adolescents, Rats in the Wall; former Hellcat Records employee) and John Gentile (previously published in Rolling Stone, MTV, Vice, AV Club, Bandcamp; editor at Punknews.org), Architects of Self-Destruction follows the chaotic Ska-Punk-Metal band from their formation through today. The book covers dozens of stories including the band’s conflict over censorship with Hellcat Records due to the original title of their first album Mediocre Generica, how the song “Clear Channel (Fuck Off)” almost split the band in two, the destruction of the pre-LoC band Choking Victim, and many more.
For the book, Logan and Gentile conducted hundreds of interviews and spoke to nearly 100 people in the LoC world including Scott Sturgeon (LoC vocalist), Fat Mike (NoFX; Fat Wreck Chords), Jesse Michaels (Operation Ivy), Steve Albini (producer), Dick Lucas (Subhumans), Mikey Erg (The Ergs, SFH), Pete Steinkopf (Bouncing Souls) to name a few.
Architects of Self-Destruction will be officially released on August 10th, 2021 via Rare Bird, who has previously released books by Jesse Michaels, Sam McPheeters, Keith Buckley, Sean Penn, DH Peligro, and more. The book can be ordered as a package with an exclusive t-shirt (available only during pre-order) and a companion zine made exclusively for the book. The zine includes content that didn’t fit into the book, exclusive pictures, flyers, interviews, and other fun stuff. Pre-orders also come signed by the authors. You can order those packages here and here!
