We are so very VERY excited to be bringing to you all a brand new premiere from Chicago-based punk band Watermelon. The band is gearing up to release their sophomore album, titled No Laughing, No Crying, on vinyl via What’s for Breakfast? Records this October and we’ve got the title track for you!
For those who who may not yet be familiar with the band, the trio writes three-chord pop punk bangers which explore themes of existentialism, mental illness, and having fun with your friends. It’s straightforward punk without the nonsense of guitar solos, pedal boards or trendy bullshit. Technical perfection takes a backseat to the heartfelt honesty of songs written in a trailer park bedroom.
The new album features eleven songs which were recorded and mixed in their practice space by Erik Nervous. It was mastered for vinyl by Christina Blunda (Mean Jeans) and pressed regionally at Wisconsin’s Waxxy Poodle.
Band member Erika shared the following about the band:
“It’s like that Dee Dee Ramone quote, we’re playing at the level of our ability. Ali and I always wanted to be in a band so I picked up a guitar and she picked up a bass and we wrote what we could play. We had been going to shows since we were kids and we were tired of being in a scene dominated by men. We didn’t care if anyone liked us, we just did it for ourselves.”
Stream the title track of the new album below and, if you’re in the Chicagoland area, make sure to head to Reed’s Local on October 4th! They will be hosting a record release party for Watermelon along with Celebrity Sighting from Madison, WI and Chicago’s own Doomzday Slutz.
