Brooklyn noise-pop trio A Very Special Episode has released a new single entitled “$5 Cover” which is a love letter to the NYC DIY scene. The track is the third to be released off their upcoming album, Freak Me Out, which will be released June 23rd via Hidden Home/EWEL Records.
“$5 Cover” is accompanied by a video that serves up a 60s time capsule that places the polite society veneer of post-war America in sharp contrast with the blown out garage rock sounds of a 2023 Brooklyn basement. As one might fittingly hope, the video is also a product of the local scene. Greg Hanson (the “Big Cheese” of King Pizza Records and drummer of The Rizzos) directed the shoot, while Seth Applebaum (Ghost Funk Orchestra) took care of filming.
Reflecting on the live power of the track, A Very Special Episode’s drummer Chayse Schutter says:
“This is a really fun and weird one to perform live, with Patrick playing the bass through both bass and guitar amps and Kasey free to dance around the space untethered to an instrument. Because of that, it’s become a favorite of ours to either open or close sets with; we’re either starting or ending strong with it.”
