Alvvays & Joanna Sternberg in Phoenix, AZ

Photo: Brandon Michel

Alvvays has been a favorite of mine since the first time I heard their album Antisocialites a few years ago. Their music was so catchy and dreamy, it was like hearing music for the first time all over again. Finally seeing them perform live was no different. Between the projection graphics, the lighting, and the sound mixes, it was like being in a dream. It was one of those shows I wish I could relive again and again and again. There’s something supernatural about how fucking great that band is. They don’t have a single mediocre song in their catalog and the entire band is so goddamn talented; it’s borderline suspicious.

Getting to photograph Alvvays has been a goal of mine for some time now and I was finally lucky enough to get to do it this past week. I’d also never gotten to see them until this show, so that was also a little bonus. There wasn’t a single person in that crowd that didn’t look like they were having the time of their lives. I was coming down from my buzz and a big-ass dinner that I had prior to the show, so I wasn’t moving quite as much as everyone else. But make no mistake, I was vibing!

There’s only a handful of bands that I think are absolutely perfect. Like, in an incapable-of-writing-a-single-bad-song kind of way. A may-or-may-not-have-sold-their-souls-to-be-this-good type of perfect. Alvvays is one of those bands. They’re also from Canada, so maybe that’s another reason they’re so incredible. If you get the chance to see this band on tour, do it. It doesn’t matter what you’re into, just do it. I’m so happy that my first time seeing them was at one of the best venues in Arizona, and it’s a show I’ll remember for a really long time.

Here are some of the photos I took at the show and I hope you enjoy ’em!
