This day was very important to me. A few months ago, a high-energy rap-rock album, INERTIA by grandson, was released. When I heard he was coming to Chicago to play the album front to back, I knew I couldn’t miss it. The album is filled with passionate political fire, and soaring hooks. With that in mind, I gathered my camera equipment and prepared myself for an unforgettable night.
The first act was Ho99o9, a hip-hop and hardcore band from Newark, New Jersey. I had never heard of them before the show and I was excited to see what they had to offer. The duo entered the stage with a very mysterious presence. The pair wore track suits with a bright “S” spray painted across their chests. The band members shared groovy dance moves, and contagious energy. The entire set was very energetic and chaotic and I had a great time capturing their performance.
The main act, Grandson, hails from Englewood, New Jersey. His style is a mix of alternative rock, rap rock, and hip-hop. I’ve been listening to his music for awhile now, and I was very excited to see him perform. When they walked onto the stage, the crow erupted in cheers. Grandson was accompanied by a very talented band behind him. The band members all turned to look at each other, and suddenly broke out into sound. The crowd was screaming the lyrics as people crowd surfed over their heads.
Grandson also took a moment to pay tribute to Bob Vylan, who was the original opener for his tour, and he spoke out about his visa being wrongly revoked. The rest of the night was a blur of moshing, headbanging, and chaotic energy. The band remained connected with their fans, they came into the pit, and had everyone mosh around them. By the end, it felt like a giant party with the band. I had a blast capturing an unforgettable night.
