Can y’all believe we’re already about halfway through 2026 (for better or worse, lol)? We are officially heading into summer mode and I was excited to not only have another fun Friday night concert ahead of me, but one that also combined one of my favorite indie/rock bands Spoon co-headlining with a new favorite, The Beths! On top of all that they played at the Fillmore, one of the most beautiful venues in Detroit.

I love the architecture of this theatre so much. I decided to get there right as the doors opened to take advantage of my photo credentials, and explore/photograph all the great views throughout the venue. On top of that, I also got to admire the many show posters for the venue that my friends have designed over the years (I even got to help make a few back in the day). Anyway, let’s get on to the amazing music we were about to enjoy!

Right before the show began I ran into photo friend Sam, who I low to shoot with and see quite often in the pits. We excitedly caught up a bit and made our way to catch Squirrel Flower kick off the vibes for the night. With an already packed house, she really set the atmosphere with her solo set and captured the room.

After that, and while the stage began setting up for the next act, I found and met up with my friend Chris, who coincidentally was the one to introduce me to Spoon so many years ago when we worked together. He has opened the door to a lot of artists for me to discover, and designs some amazing posters for so many great shows.

The Beths were up next, and I absolutely loved the setup of their stage. They really kicked things off instantly connecting with the crowd, and on top of that set the tone for the rest of the night for this co-headlining tour. The lamps, stage lighting, and even parts throughout the theater and to the sides (the wings?) were all synched together as one big colorful entity in unison. Rainbows and vibrant colors synched with their tight and up-beat music orchestrating it all for the audience to enjoy. They even had a surprise with a little device or smoke cannon popping out recorders to play during their second song, “No Joy.” It was a great way to be spoiled by a band that was unfamiliar to me not too long ago, and I cannot wait to see them again at Riot Fest later this year to do it all over again.

Finally, we close out the second half of the night with Spoon! As Britt Daniel and the band made their way out, you could hear nothing but shouting and cheering until they kicked things off with an older classic, “Take A Walk.” It was hard to gauge what songs to expect from this show. Their last album was Lucifer on the Sofa, released 4 years ago, and they are also in the final stages of working on the new album, so it was up in the air of what may be played.

Overall the fans were treated to something like 18+ songs spanning 25 years over their discography. I want to say they played like two to three songs from over six of their albums, but lost count while joining the crowd enjoying it all until the stage was empty and the lights were on. Such an amazing tour to remember and think about whenever those artists come up next on my playlists.
