When I was my daughter’s age, it was the Spring of 1984. I would never declare that “music was better in my day,” but still, some pretty timeless, indelible classics hit the racks at this time. Look at just a handful of the albums released within a month or so of when I was her age:
– Van Halen “1984”
– “Weird Al” Yankovic “In 3-D”
– Prince “Purple Rain”
– RATT “Out of the Cellar”
– Echo & the Bunnymen “Ocean Rain”
– Twisted Sister “Stay Hungry”
– Bruce Springsteen “Born In the USA”
– Scorpions “Love At First Sting”
– Madonna “Like a Virgin”
– Metallica “Ride the Lightning”
– “Footloose” Soundtrack
– Judas Priest “Defenders of the Faith”
– The Cure “The Top”
– R.E.M. “Reckoning”
– Hüsker Dü “Zen Arcade”
– INXS “The Swing”
– DIO “Last In Line”
– U2 “Unforgettable Fire”
– Killing Joke “Eighties”
While music styles come, go, and evolve, it is comforting to see that it can still inspire the same reactions I had when I was 11. Here is my daughter and me trying our hand at one of her current favorites:
