This week, Andy is joined by John Gentile, a long standing feature editor at Punknews. For those unfamiliar, Punknews is a music news website/zine that has been going strong for over 20 years, centered mainly on artists within the Punk Rock scene, and has been one of the main sources for up-to-date information about bands across many sub-genres ranging from hardcore to Ska to Shoegaze to Noise. It also holds the title (at least for Andy) as being the first website that featured mass punk-policing and message board troll behavior. Even with that in mind, it’s been a staple in the music scene and deserves credit where credit is due.
John has been contributing there for much of its existence and has some great stories to tell about his time. We dive into the history of the website and go into some of the bigger stories that they’ve “broke” over the years. We also chat about why we are still dealing with the punk police after all of these years, and how the newer generation of punks aren’t necessarily following in those footsteps. He gives me a nice breakdown about the thriving Philadelphia Punk scene and provides his top ten albums.
* quick note about this episode, we experienced some internet connection issues while doing the interview, so there are a few spots where audio dips out…. apologies for that.
