It’s almost that time of year again, where thousands upon thousands of black t-shirt and jorts wearing music fans will descend upon Gainesville, FL in hopes of seeing their favorite bands and drinking just enough to not remember seeing anything all. While there are hundreds of well-known names on the Fest schedule this year, we wanted to showcase a handful of the bands who are heading down to Florida and playing for the very first time. So keep reading, check out all the bands in this series, and get to know some really great under the radar talent!
Next on the roster is Austin, TX’s Breaklights. The band released a full-length album, entitled Wind Down, earlier this year via Wiretap Records. Make sure to check them out on Friday, October 28th at The Backyard at Boca/Palomino at 8PM.
Stream Wind Down in full below and make sure to catch them during Fest weekend!
Interview
How long has Breaklights been a band?
We were briefly a band in 2011 for about a year but really got going January of 2016. So let’s just say… six-ish years?
Have you attended Fest before?
Our guitarist Steven has been five years and is a bit of an expert Fester, and our drummer Steve went once in 2017 when he filled in for Mike Felumlee’s band The Bigger Empty, but this will be the first Fest trip for the rest of us. Looking forward to it!
What are you stoked for during Fest weekend?
I think we’re mostly just excited to see a ton of really good bands since it’s been a while since we’ve been to a big festival like this. Some names on our list would be: Dead Bars, Dan Vapid and The Cheats, The Copyrights, Talk Show Host, Odd Robot, and our buddies from Austin – Dropped Out.
What’s your best Fest story?
We’re struggling for a good story but I’ve heard quite a few folks talk about the year where the temp dropped drastically and all the bands sold out of their hoodies. We’re coming prepared this year!
Let’s say you’re booking the lineup of a festival that represents you as a band. What would the top 5 headliners be?
Smoking Popes
Jawbreaker
Green Day (but only playing pre-2000 stuff)
The Gamits
The Swellers
What does the band have coming up? What can we all look forward to from ya’ll?
Not much on our agenda at the moment mostly because this year was such a whirlwind, but I would say that we’d love for anyone to check out our new record Wind Down that came out this year on Wiretap Records. We worked really hard on it and appreciate any new listeners!
