Today marks the 8-year anniversary of the passing of David Bowie and Toronto acoustic-punk rockers Public Mess have just released a cover of “Modern Love” in honor of Bowie.
When asked about the recording, band member Cactus said the following:
“We didn’t really rehearse the song prior to recording it. I sent the guys a text message a few days before our recording session and asked them how they felt about recording the song. They were all on board. The next day at band practice we ran through the chord changes for a minute, and that was about it. The idea was to work it out on the spot as we recorded it. To capture a recording that was spontaneous and natural. We all love David Bowie’s music. I can remember being a little kid when I first heard Modern Love on the radio. The song stuck with me, and has been on my covers-list forever!”
This recording is also the last song to feature drummer Andrew Heule with the band. For personal reasons Andrew has decided to step down from drumming duties. Andrew was a founding member of Public Mess and has appeared on the 2023 releases Too Many Ghosts EP, as well as the Dark Party EP.
