There are few things that get my rapidly aging, haggard ass to a five band bill on a weekday. But when Freya Wilcox & the Howl and Cold Wrecks rolled through Chicago on their way to Vehicle City Fest, how could I say no? I got off work on June 14th, took a nap to shake off a longstanding hangover, woke up, and chugged as much caffeine as possible before heading to Burlington Bar. The out-of-towners were assisted by local openers The Rip Ups, Action Boy, and Turn N Fire sandwiching the band right in the center. I spun my first fidget spinners. Cold Wrecks experienced their first Chicago Handshakes (a shot of Malort and an Old Style). And the night ended in a heated education session and debate regarding Shrek: the musical. It was one of those nights where you stumble home exhausted, cursing the job you have to be up for in mere hours, but so enamored with this music scene and how far it reaches across this country.
