I went to a show at my regular haunt in Seattle, The Kraken, on December 8th to go enjoy my buds in Young Go Hards and Heck Yes. I had heard of this touring band, Decent Criminal, who was playing that night but had yet to check out their music. HOLY HELL was I in for a pleasant treat. I stood in awe throughout their entire set at how well they played, how much I enjoyed their songs, and with anger at myself for not checking them out sooner. I bought their album Bloom that night and played it on repeat in my car for weeks.
Bloom is the second full-length to come from the California-based band. I take some comfort in the fact that it was released on October 13th, 2017 so I didn’t miss TOO much possible listen-time. But seriously, do yourself a favor and give it a listen now if you haven’t yet. The ten-song banger starts off with the anthem “Neurotic”. It’s haunting, catchy, danceable, grungy, and has lyrics that resonate. They started their record off with a seriously high bar, and the rest of the album does not disappoint. “Deviant” has an insanely catchy riff and makes you want to sing along, even if you don’t know the lyrics yet. “Expectations” is one of those songs that is just perfect to listen to while driving. It makes you feel like you’re ready for adventure, some self-reflection, and new beginnings simultaneously.
This album gives you all the feels, sometimes all at the same time. My favorite track is quite possibly “Melt”. I have to say ‘possibly’ because it is honestly that hard to choose. This song gives me goosebumps with its on-point lyrics, perfect harmonies, and delicious drum fills. I can’t say enough good things about this record. No, really, I can’t say enough good things so I’m just going to leave you all with one last “GO LISTEN TO THIS NOW!”.
