Are you there Beer? It's Me, Erin.

The Bombpops

Dear Beer

April 6, 2018
Fat Wreck Chords

The Bombpops just released an insanely good 4-song EP on Fat Wreck Chords April 6th. I don’t even know how they had time to write and record these songs with all the touring they’ve been doing since the release of Fear of Missing Out last year. But I’m super glad they did.

The EP opens with the namesake, “Dear Beer.” The track starts out with a delicious bass line and picks up into a motherfucking anthem. “Exaggerated expectations, a million shitty situations/ Does my disappointment show?” I mean, how perfect are these lyrics? “I’m so sick of drinking by myself. Nobody likes a fucking downer,” is exactly what I should have had written on my Tinder bio all this time. Seriously though, I’ve already listened to this track at least 100 times.

“Polluted Skies” follows beginning with a bit more somber approach, but is still a head-banger. With lyrics like “LA never felt like home until the day I woke up to you/ Polluted skies never looked so blue,” it’s an unexpected love song. I love how this song transitions subjects seamlessly from not feeling like where you’re at is “home” and finding a romantic connection.

“Turn up the Thermostat” tells a snarky story of looking forward to seeing someone in hell. It has a fun pop-punk beat that The Bombpops have become known for. “But in the fire is where I’m most comfortable, so I turn up the thermostat in my own private hell” are lyrics that I can personally attest are true. The last time I saw The Bombpops, we were backstage at El Corazon in Seattle taking turns straddling the small heater because it was freezing. So maybe this song is actually about that. Probably not… but maybe.

Rounding out the EP is “I Call Bullshit,” a fun ditty that reminds us to “stop bullshittin’ your way through life.” The a-woah-oh-oh’s are fantastic. I keep finding myself randomly singing them.

I award Dear Beer 5 out of 5 blue ribbons.

The Bombpops have two dates coming up in CA and then head on a European tour. Check out their dates here.
