On May 6th, Double Play Saloon in Blue Island hosted yet another wonderful year of Beer Can’d Fest. “Where is Blue Island and what the hell is Beer Can’d?” you may ask. Blue Island is a lovely little mecca just south of the Chicago city limits. It’s a place where gambling is legal and the drinks are cheap. Beer Can’d Fest is an annual event combining (mostly) local bands and local beers. This year the Blue Island Beer Company made a special limited batch of tall cans filled with Dank Punk for the event. All in all, it’s a great way to get drunk for cheap while listening to great music in a place much cooler than your normal Chicagoland suburbs.
There were fourteen bands this year including newbies JD, The Islanderz, an amazing and super entertaining ska band called Tone Zone Skam, 80 Proof Preacher, Big Baby which features Little Dave Merriman of The Arrivals on vocals, Sammy Kay from New Jersery, The Run Around, Run & Punch, a temporary re-branding of local band The Ridgelands, Death & Memphis, the always awesome Brick Assassin, Calling All Cars, Nightcap, and The Crombies. It should be noted that Dave Simon, guitarist for The Crombies, was terribly injured recently and could not make the show. In his place, the band installed a stoic Dave statue made from wood. Cobra Lounge is having a benefit show for Dave on May 24th to raise money to assist with his injuries. If you’re in Chicago, check out the details HERE!
Take a look at photos below to see all the bands and the numerous lighting obstacles that I had to deal with and make sure to come out next year for Beer Can’d Fest!
