For me, weekday shows are always a nice way to break up the work week. You’re halfway to the weekend, but partying like it’s already the weekend. I don’t know a better way to celebrate then hitting up the second installment of It’s Raining Femme at Gman Tavern. This new monthly showcase is known for celebrating femme-identifying and non-binary artists. Wednesday, May 2nd featured local artist’s Ovef Ow, The Just Luckies, and Ashby and the Oceanns. The proceeds of this show were benefiting Rape Victim Advocates.
It was my first time seeing Ashby and the Oceanns live. Vocalist Ash Barker delivered a slew of heartfelt songs that were both peaceful and amazing. While it was a relatively small intimate crowd for the weekday show, the attention was completely undivided. Ash admitted being a huge Weezer fan which caught my attention because I’ve always had a soft spot for the first three albums and the deep cuts from the band’s catalog. She performed “Island in the Sun.” It dawned on me during the performance that the song is almost 20 years old and that Green Album still feels like a new Weezer album to me. I feel really old…
Kicking off the second spot in the lineup was The Just Luckies. They’re another band that I had never seen before live, but I was aware of their online presence. They blew my mind. It was a very soulful performance with a warm, beautiful sound that’s emotionally charged. They had moments of pop stylings blended with a soulful country-like feel. It apparently was also the third time they had shared a bill with Ovef Ow. I would love to see a split or mini-tour happen between the two of these bands.
Ovef Ow closed out the night by kicking our butts with their dancy rhythms and catchy hooks. Singer Marites Velasquez apologized to the crowd for the giant submarine sized tour bus parked visibly outside the venue. She joked that they just couldn’t find good parking in the neighborhood for their GIANT tour bus. But in reality, Sofi Tukker was performing next door at the Metro that night. Ovef Ow plowed through their set killing it with songs from their EP Working which is out now but limited to less than ten copies. They also played newer material that I couldn’t be more stoked to hear more of.
All in all, it was a great show and I look forward to seeing more of the monthly showcase. Speaking of – the next installement of It’s Raining Femme will be on Wednesday, June 6th featuring Mollow, Pelafina, and Sadie and the Stark. I strongly recommend checking it out!
