I shot one of the coolest shows of my life the other night, and it’s still tripping me out. Getting to photograph Jawbreaker was one of the most rad experiences that I’ll never forget. On top of photographing them, they also played just about every one of my favorite songs; the setlist was perfect. I saw them back in 2018 when they did their first set of reunion shows and they sounded better now than they did five years ago. One of the best parts of the show was the shortage of phones out. It’s like everyone who was there for them knew exactly what the assignment was. Like I said, it was rad.
Jawbreaker has left such a strong and lasting impression on so many people and you could feel it at the show, myself included. My old band covered “Accident Prone” and “Boxcar,” our drummer had a Lisa Simpson salt girl tattoo on his thigh, in practice we referred to one song as “the Jawbreaker one,” and our first EP was a very clear indicator that we were big fans. The first time I heard Dear You, I couldn’t believe I’d gone so long without it. I wanted to cover just about every song on that record. Going through the prior albums, I was even more blown away. I remember being so sad that I’d never see them played live. Well, look at me now! I’ve seen them twice now and I have literal photographic evidence.
The support bands they got could not have been more fitting either. Grumpster, a fellow Bay Area band, and Joyce Manor absolutely killed it. They were the perfect groups to bridge the gap between every fan that was there.
Even though the photos I took just don’t do it justice, trust me when I say Jawbreaker put on one of the most solid performances you’d expect from them. Even Blake stopped during their set to tell everyone how great they were doing. Do yourself a favor and don’t miss any of their shows if you’re in any of these states or cities. You won’t be disappointed, I promise.
