This day was incredibly important to me. Ten years ago, an amazing pop-punk album, Copacetic by Knuckle Puck, was released. When I heard they were coming to Chicago to perform the album in full, I knew I couldn’t miss it. Not only do I love this band, but I also have a deep appreciation for this album. With that in mind, I prepared for what promised to be an unforgettable night, gathering my equipment and heading to the venue.
The first act was Ben Quad a band I didn’t know much about, but their unique name caught my attention. I’m always intrigued by bands with creative names. They’re also known as a “butt rock” band, and they definitely lived up to it. From the moment they took the stage, you could tell they were excited to perform. The guitarist was jumping up and down with enthusiasm, while the vocalist made heartwarming jokes and interacted with the crowd. Between songs, they played funny themed clips, like the “Home Depot” theme song, adding to the fun. The band had great energy and put on an amazing performance.
The second band, Koyo, is a melodic hardcore band from Brook, New York. I hadn’t heard of them before, but I was excited to see what they had to offer. As soon as the lead singer entered, his energy was infectious. He moved around the stage and engaged with the crowd as the first song kicked in. They had some killer breakdowns, and the overall performance was high-energy. It was a blast to capture their intense set.
Next up was Origami Angel, a two-piece rock band from Washington, D.C. I’ve been listening to them for a while, so I was really looking forward to their set. The duo walked on stage with great enthusiasm, exchanging a knowing look before launching into their first song. The vocalist was full of energy, jumping around the whole time, and the drummer added a lively, upbeat vibe to their set. Their performance was chaotic in the best way, and I had a lot of fun capturing their energy.
Finally, it was time for the main act—Knuckle Puck. I could barely contain my excitement as I waited for them to take the stage. I positioned myself in front of the barricade, camera in hand, ready for the madness. When they walked on stage, the crowd erupted in cheers. They opened with “Wall to Wall (Depreciation),” the first song off Copacetic, and the entire crowd started singing along. The energy was electric as the band jumped around, all smiles, while the vocalist moved across the stage to engage with every side of the crowd. I’ve seen Knuckle Puck a few times, but this crowd was by far the wildest. There were nonstop mosh pits and crowd surfers throughout the show. It was an absolute blast capturing their set, and the night was one I’ll never forget.
